What is a 3D product configurator and how does it work in e-commerce?

A 3D product configurator is an interactive viewer embedded in the product page that lets shoppers customise a product in real time. When a colour, finish, material or part is selected, the 3D model updates instantly without a page reload. Because the selection is wired to the store platform's variant structure, the product added to the cart matches what is on screen.

What is the difference between WebAR and AR that requires an app?

WebAR runs in the browser: the shopper taps a button on the product page and moves straight into AR through AR Quick Look on iOS or Scene Viewer on Android, downloading nothing. App-based AR offers more technical control but the download step breaks the purchase flow. GlareAR uses WebAR for product page experiences.

Which phones does the AR experience work on?

On iOS, AR Quick Look works on ARKit-capable iPhone and iPad models running iOS 12 or later. On Android, Scene Viewer requires Google Play Services for AR to be installed. Desktop browsers do not support AR; GlareAR hides the AR button on those devices and shows a rotatable 3D viewer instead.

What is the difference between glTF, USDZ and GLB?

glTF is a web-focused 3D transmission format developed by the Khronos Group; GLB is its binary version packing geometry and textures into a single file. USDZ is Apple's AR-oriented adaptation of Pixar's USD format and is what iOS AR Quick Look expects. In practice GLB is produced for web and Android and USDZ for iOS AR, both from the same source model.

How much does a 3D configurator cost and how is it priced?

Independent market aggregations put custom configurator development at 4,000–10,000 USD for a single product and 10,000–30,000 USD for a multi-option build with rules (Hontran, 2026). Web-optimized 3D model production runs 200–1,000 USD per product (CPQ3D, 2026). The real driver is not product count but whether variants are rule-dependent.

How long does it take to produce a 3D model of a product?

The determining factors are whether CAD data exists and how complex the geometry is. With clean manufacturing CAD available, a single product can be completed in a few working days. Without CAD, the model is derived from the technical dimension table and multi-angle reference photography, which takes longer. Multi-part or articulated products scale with part count.

How much does 3D visualization save compared with studio photography?

Savings appear as variant count grows. For a single-variant product, studio photography is usually cheaper. Because every colour and finish variant needs its own shoot, logistics and retouching, photography cost grows linearly with variants, whereas in 3D variants derive from the same geometry and that growth is far slower.

Can web-ready 3D models be produced from my CAD files?

Yes, and that is the most efficient starting point. Manufacturing CAD files (STEP, IGES, SolidWorks) carry millions of polygons and cannot be used on the web directly; GlareAR retopologizes them, applies PBR material channels and exports glTF/GLB plus USDZ. Because dimensions come from CAD, 1:1 accuracy in AR is preserved.

How do you add 3D models and AR to a Shopify store?

Shopify supports 3D models as product media: the model is uploaded alongside images and video and the AR button appears automatically on supported devices. The required file is a web-optimized glTF/GLB, with a USDZ counterpart for iOS AR Quick Look. Shopify's own data reports a 94% higher conversion rate for products with 3D/AR content (Shopify, 2020).

Can a 3D configurator be integrated into Ticimax or İdeasoft?

Yes. Since these platforms have no dedicated native media type for 3D models, GlareAR installs the viewer as a standalone block embedded in the product page template and matches the model by product code. Variant selection is wired to the platform's own variant fields, so the colour selected in the 3D view goes to the cart as the same product.

Do 3D models slow down page speed on mobile?

Not when implemented correctly. The viewer lazy-loads: the model file downloads only once the shopper interacts with it, so initial page load is unaffected. The real risk is an oversized model, which GlareAR controls by defining a mobile file size budget up front, using geometry compression and texture resolution limits.

Why does 3D visualization matter for watch and accessory brands?

A watch derives its perceived value from how it behaves under light: the dial catches light by angle, the steel case reflects along its brush direction, sapphire crystal turns transparent at certain angles. Photography freezes that at one angle while a 3D viewer hands it to the shopper. Millimetre specs such as case diameter also stop being abstract numbers.

What should you look for when choosing a 3D/AR provider in Turkey?

Three criteria matter most: who owns the models, whether delivered formats are platform independent (glTF/GLB and USDZ together), and whether the provider has experience on your e-commerce platform.
