How do you add a 3D model to Shopify?
Shopify supports uploading a 3D model as product media: the model joins images and video in the product gallery, and the AR button appears automatically on supported devices. The critical part is the model file itself — a high-polygon or uncompressed model slows the gallery down. GlareAR optimizes the model to the budget Shopify expects.

When is the native viewer not enough?
Shopify's native viewer is sufficient for showing a single product model. If shoppers need to change colour, finish or parts in real time, the native media field falls short because every variant has to be uploaded as a separate media file. At that point GlareAR installs a dedicated configurator viewer that changes variants on a single model at the material layer.
| Requirement | Native Shopify 3D | GlareAR configurator |
|---|---|---|
| 360° rotation of one model | Sufficient | Not required |
| iOS/Android AR | Sufficient | Not required |
| Real-time colour/finish change | Each variant becomes a separate file | One model, material layer |
| Part and module combinations | Not supported | Rule-based scene |
| Live pricing driven by selection | Not supported | Wired to variant structure |
How does the model file affect page speed?
In the Shopify gallery the 3D model is lazy-loaded: nothing downloads until the shopper opens the model tab, so initial page load and Largest Contentful Paint are not directly affected. The real risk is an oversized model, which makes the shopper wait once they open the viewer. GlareAR keeps that wait under control with geometry compression and texture resolution limits.
